Our Mission:

The mission of Sandhills Community College's Center of Learning and Simulation Center (CoLaS) is to cultivate a learning environment of caring, trust, respect, honesty, collaboration, teamwork and constructive feedback in order to meet evidence based professional standards of care and enhance patient safety and clinical outcomes through the use of multimodal simulation and realistic experiences.

Our Vision:

  • Advance all phases of learning development from novice to graduate healthcare professional by fostering mindfulness, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, and analysis of clinical actions moving the student beyond skill acquisition to concept integration
  • Implement culturally sensitive psychomotor and communication skills
  • Foster collaborative alliances and encourage multidisciplinary training grounded in educational theory
  • Aspire to excellence by improving healthcare education, patient care and student role development through continued education and review of annual competencies by using adaptable surroundings and multimodal simulation technologies

The CoLaS is a 5,000 square foot state-of-the-art learning and simulation center comprised of 3 centers: the Primary Simulation Center, the Family Life Center, and the Pediatric Center. Each center is equipped with digital pan tilt zoom cameras, a large HD flat screen TV, headwall units with medical gas outlets that allow for simulated bedside oxygen, air, and suction, hospital beds, bedside cabinets, over bed tables, and separation by privacy curtains. Wireless mobile laptops or student tablets allow for bedside documentation in each center via Wolters Kluwer Lippincott's Docucare electronic medical record.

Mobile medication dispensing system with scanning capabilities allows for student medication administrations. Mobile tables and chairs located within each center increase versatility and allow for debriefing arrangements.

The CoLas has a dual control room serving the Family Life Center and the Pediatric Center. An additional control room serves the Primary Simulation Center. Each control room has multiple monitors, video control boxes, and computers, which work in conjunction with the Laerdal Sim View video capture system. There is also a Two way line Emulator (two way phone system) for student's to use during simulations when calling the physician or ancillary departments.

The CoLaS also has additional learning centers that are multifunctional. They contain mobile headwall units for use in the center or transport to classrooms, patient simulators, static manikins and task trainers. These centers also serve as larger debriefing areas with computer and projection capabilities.
