The Center of Learning and Simulation (CoLaS), in the Department of Nursing, is housed in Kennedy Hall on the beautiful campus of Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst North Carolina.
The Nursing program originally opened its doors in 1966 in response to a community need. Over the years the Sandhills nursing program has been a catalyst of change, striving to prepare students for nursing practice through the use of technology combined with a mindfulness approach. The CoLaS uses high, medium and low fidelity human patient simulators, as well as, task trainers for teaching and learning tools. Through the use of multimodal simulation, reaching across the lifespan, CoLaS mission is to cultivate a learning environment of caring, trust, respect, honesty, collaboration, teamwork and constructive feedback in order to meet evidence based professional standards of care and enhance patient safety and clinical outcomes.
A rich history of college and community support enabled the Department of Nursing in 2010 to begin the process of renovating their existing nursing lab, two classrooms and offices resulting in 5,000 square feet of simulation center. A three-fold partnership made the Sandhills Community College Nursing Healthcare Simulation Lab a reality, through the ongoing commitment from The Helene K. Bracken Health Fund at Sandhills Community College, a commitment from Sandhills Community College using Repair and Renovation Funds, and support from FirstHealth of the Carolinas.
